G70 provided the design for the Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i's STEM Center for Excellence, located at Camp Paumalu on O‘ahu's North Shore. Camp Paumalu is a 135-acre site nestled along the ridges of the Ko‘olau mountain range, offering a secluded environment for its visitors. The architectural design of the STEM Center blends seamlessly with this unique and pristine site. Only one of the building’s two stories is visible upon arrival. The Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i partnered with Innovative Readiness Training (IRT), a U.S. military volunteer training program that provides training for military personnel while addressing community needs. IRT will provide skilled labor during construction. The STEM Center will feature sustainable and educational elements such as natural ventilation, rainwater catchment, daylight controls, an astronomy viewing deck, and test plot gardens. The lower level includes a commercial kitchen and dining area that accommodates up to 200 guests, with direct access to the exterior dining lanai and lawn area. The dining area features a fireplace made from the stones of the former lodge's chimney. Restrooms and showers will serve the entire camp. Interior finishes will evoke the feel of a camp lodge, with exposed wood ceilings, walls, and floors. Energy-efficient lighting and ceiling fans will help maintain comfort in the naturally ventilated rooms.
