Hawaii Foodbank, AIA Honolulu ‘CANstruct’ solution to food insecurity

KAHALA, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Hawaii Foodbank has teamed up with AIA Honolulu for the 19th annual CANstruction competition at Kahala Mall.

Eight teams of architects and engineering professionals were invited to Kahala Mall to test their creativity, design and building skills by creating 3D structures made entirely of several thousand cans of food donated by the Hawaii Foodbank.

Each team will draw inspiration from board games and video games to reflect the theme “Game Over for Hunger.”

Teams will then “reimagine the gaming universe to combat food insecurity” with the donated cans to create a “symbol of hope” as a reminder that we can “level up in the fight against hunger.”

The following architecture firms and allied design partners will be competing in this year’s competition:

  • Bowers + Kubota Consulting, Inc.
  • AHL, Coffman Engineers & HHF Planners
  • Design Partners Inc. & Castle and Cooke
  • G70 & Swinerton Builders
  • HDR Inc. & Rider Levett Bucknall; Jacobs
  • RIM Architects & HonBuilders
  • RMA Architects Inc.

After the structures are built, the public will be invited to vote for their favorite completed structures from Sept. 14 through Sept. 21.

Votes can be cast through AIA Honolulu’s website or by scanning the QR code at their favorite structures. For every vote cast, a $1 donation will be made to the Hawaii Foodbank. The structure with the most votes will be named the People’s Choice Award.

In recent years, the event has helped gather “743,690 pounds of canned goods, which is enough food to make 612,437 meals and over $110,000 for the Foodbank.”

Build Day is set for Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where professionals will craft their masterpieces. Keiki ages five to 12 will also be able to participate in the fun at the Keiki Corner from 10 a.m. to noon, building their own creations with hundreds of donated cans.
