G70 provided design for the Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i's STEM Center for Excellence located at Camp Paumalu on O‘ahu's North Shore. Camp Paumalu is a 135-acre site that sits along the ridges of the Ko‘olau mountain range, providing a secluded environment for its visitors. The architectural design of the STEM Center blends with this unique, pristine site. Only one of the building’s two stories is visible upon arrival. Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i partnered with Innovative Readiness Training (IRT), a US military volunteer training program that provides training for military personnel while addressing community needs. IRT will provided skilled labor during construction. The STEM Center will features sustainable and educational elements natural ventilation, rainwater catchment, daylight controls, astronomy viewing deck and test plot gardens. The lower area is a commercial kitchen and dining area accommodates up to 200 guests with direct access to the exterior dining lanai and lawn area. The dining area features a fireplace that reuses the stones of the former lodge's chimney. Restrooms and showers serve the entire camp. Interior finishes will evoke the feeling of a camp lodge with exposed wood ceilings, walls, and floors. Energy efficient lighting and ceiling fans keep the naturally ventilated rooms comfortable.
