‘Iolani School: Kaneshiro Science & Innovation Center / Sidney and Minnie Kosasa Performance Studios

Honolulu, O‘ahu

In 16,000 SF of additional learning spaces, students in Lower School (grades K-6) are offered opportunities to cultivate their love for both the sciences and performing arts. The Labs and Studios bring together these differing studies by uniting the two buildings through a shared open courtyard. This space increases opportunities for outdoor learning and performance, as well as spontaneous exchanges between students and teachers. Within the courtyard, there are two “trees” that ground these spaces in nature. The buildings were built around an existing natural living tree that could represent the performing arts – wild and free, where in contrast, across the courtyard, a fabricated “tree” reflects the possibilities of the sciences.
