After being socially distanced for a few years, the Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) PetWalk was back IN PERSON! Our staff took the opportunity to meet up with their fur-babies for some healthy snacks and fellowship at Kapiʻolani Regional Park. This year the HHS raised over $300,000 to help O’ahu’s animals in need!

On September 17, eight teams of local architects and allied design and engineering professionals put their design and building skills to the test as they CANstructed “A Garden of CANstructures”! G70 and Swinerton Builders teamed together to bring the ‘I‘iwi bird to life – our theme “Think Green so the ‘I‘iwi CAN Nest” hit the bill to bring awareness to Climate Action and be apart of the (design) solution.

Thanks to our creative staff volunteers, we took home the “Best Use of Labels” Award! Congratulations to all the distinguished entrants and mahalo for coming together to alleviate hunger, and plant seeds toward a better tomorrow as we head into the future with hope and positivity.

Volunteers worked in the loʻi kalo by pulling weeds, adding nutrients, and laying down ti leaf for natural weed suppression. After a satisfying morning of hard work, several volunteers joined a tour of Heʻeia led by Kumu Kaipoʻi Kelling. Kumu Kaipoʻi shared the mo‘olelo (stories/history) of wahi pana (legendary places) such as the ʻili ‘āina of Waipao, ‘Ioleka‘a, and Keahiakahoe. Kumu Kaipoʻi’s tour showed us the traditional names of our ‘āina and how learning the proper names of our ‘āina is one of the many ways we aloha our ‘āina because these names often tell the history of that place. Being able to retell the mo’olelo behind them helps to carry on the legacy and knowledge of these places.

Huli ka lima i lalo (turn the hands down). To put one’s hands to work on the ‘āina means to put one’s aloha, oneʻs spirit, and oneʻs naʻau into that land. G70 employees teamed up with the Trust for Public Land in partnership with Livable Hawaii Kai, and volunteers from various organizations came to Hāwea heiau and Keawāwa wetland in Maunalua to mālama ʻāina; planting native plants, removing weeds and other invasive species, clearing the habitat for ʻalae ʻula, and learning technique to lash for the hale.

G70, along with other organizations, adopted the entire Pu’uhonua O Wai’anae Village for the holidays. Gifts for the children and family hygiene baskets, which were stocked with laundry detergent, mosquito punk, disinfecting wipes and toilet paper, were delivered the week before Christmas to bring joy to those living in the Village. More than 30 G70 employees contributed to this project in some way, whether it was purchasing gifts for a child, gift wrapping, gift delivery or monetary donations.

Puʻuhonua O Waiʻanae is a village of approximately 250 people living unhoused on the edge of the Waiʻanae Boat Harbor on the leeward side of Oʻahu. It is home to keiki, kūpunam and working families. Two thirds are Native Hawaiian.

In October 2021, G70 participated in the annual Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) PetWalk virtually. The event raises funds that help over 20,000 animals seeking HHS services each year. G70 staff took the opportunity to meet up with their fur-babies for a socially distanced playdate supporting a great cause.

G70 participated in the annual AIA Honolulu Canstruction® competition held on October 26, 2021, that supported the Hawai‘i Foodbank at Kahala Mall. The G70 team gathered to build a shave ice sculpture titled “If Can, CAN, if no can, eat Shave Ice”. This innovative design brought home an award for structural integrity!

Teamwork makes dream work! In April 2021, G70 team members along with Sherwin Williams Hawai‘i painted a Matson container that Special Olympics were using for storage.  We painted their iconic Special Olympics Athlete’s Oath and “Play Unified Live Unified” at its new headquarters in Kapolei.

For the 14th Annual Canstruction® competition, themed “Aloha Spirit,” 4 teams of talented local architects, engineers and allied design professionals “canstructed” giant structures for 6 hours made entirely of thousands of cans of food at our new location in Kahala Mall. This year’s Canstruction® structures were designed with nearly 12,000 cans of desperately needed meats, soups, meals, vegetables, and soups. An additional 2,200 cans were used for the Keiki Corner, where kids were provided the opportunity to participate in the fun.

G70 sponsored Honolulu Habitat for Humanity (HHH) Build Day to help Darlene Kaniho build a new home in Papakolea, on the hill that holds so much of her family’s history.
Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is a part of a global, nonprofit housing organization, dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and world through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by providing training and access to resources to help families improve shelter conditions.

Group 70 volunteers came out on Saturday to help Trust for Public Land Honouliuli Forest Preserve project. Over 100 volunteers from various organizations came out to assist TPL with upkeep of forest lands at Pohakea Pass on the Waianae Ridge.

G70 employees partnered with the Trust for Public Land and North Shore Community Land Trust improve public lands on O‘ahu’s north shore. Over 50 volunteers from various organizations came out to assist with a beach clean up, invasive species removal, and planting of native beach cover vegetation at Kahuku Point.
